Genre Analysis
Introduction
There are over one hundred thousand people waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. Among those people are felons who are currently incarcerated. The topic for this genre analysis is based on the idea of whether prisoners should be allowed to be placed on the organ transplant waiting list or not. The first genre that was chosen is the medical journal that was written by a few doctors who collaborated together (Cameron, Subramanian, Sulkowski, Thomas,Nelson.2008). The name of the journal is Should a Prisoner Be Placed on the Organ Transplant Waiting List? The second genre selected was a picture used to promote National Donate Life Month, created by Jennifer Sky, for The Rumpus website (2011).
The medical journal is based on a man that is in need of a liver transplant. This man was convicted of a double homicide and is a former alcoholic and drug addict. His doctor is concerned that he will not fulfill the follow up treatment if he does receive the transplant. The picture is of a man, with the words “recyclables inside” written across his chest, with stiches running through the middle of the words. The man is not wearing a shirt, with the intent that you can clearly see his chest and the text. An additional element in this image is the stitches that run from the middle of the text to the end of the picture. These elements are going to establish which genre most effectively presents the issue of organ donation.
Audience and Purpose
The image for this genre analysis was created for a specific website. It was intended to get older adults, young adults, and teenagers to think about donating their organs. The picture has a double meaning. This requires the observer to interpret what is meant by “recyclables inside.” Therefore, this is geared toward an older audience who would understand this. In addition, the picture may appeal to young teenagers because during this time is when they are able to decide if they want to be organ donors. This may be a poster that is placed in a doctor’s office or in a medical magazine.
Unlike the image, the journal is more precise with the text. This piece was intended as research for the Virtual Mentor. This journal was written by doctors with the purpose to reach other medical professionals, politics as an issue to discuss with government, and people that maybe on the transplant list waiting for an organ. Both genres are involved with similar discourse communities that include doctors, organ donors, organ recipients and people involved with organ donation organizations. The journal has a discourse community that is directed towards inmates that need transplants as well. The reading of the journal is more specific and will take a bit more time to appreciate then the image. The picture has a rapid understanding, while the journal takes about five minutes to read.
These genres have selected different purposes. The image is used to persuade the reader to consider the donation of their organs, while the journal is informative on the topic that a doctor was confronted with. Medical journals are written in a formal text because are used in professional settings. The text contains extensive vocabulary and is full of detail. The picture on the other hand, is a more informal lexis not quite as widespread as the journal, but is to the point. With both genres, the topic is clearly stated and there is no confusion on the message that is being inferred. The language in both of these fields is appropriate to individuals that understand the idea of this social issue.
The major differences between these two genres are the length of the text. The journal is written in a detailed manner with many different points of negative and positive outlooks. The picture seems to only have enough planetary to state the obvious message. Both publications have impacting messages that are related to the same social issue
Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos, Logos
The genres establish ethos by being published in credible sources. The image was used during a month long campaign to promote organ donation. Below the picture, on the website, are many statistics and facts that go along with organ donation. The event is credible, as well as the website where it is featured, because they are both recognized sources by donation organizations. As for the journal the credibility comes from the doctors that are involved in the authorization of the piece. Another source of authority is the book that the journal is published in and the concrete elements that are featured in the chronicle.
These genres have emotional ties, but both in different ways. The picture gives you a sense of compassion for people that need an organ transplant. It promotes the idea that you have the necessary materials to save a life. The medical journal sets an in-between emotion because you either feel sympathy for the prisoners or you feel that they do not deserve to be on the transplant list because of their choice of actions. Some people may feel that it is an extension of bad karma for the regulation they chose to break, which lead to their incarceration.
The evidence of support is exposed within the text of the genres. The evidence of the picture is clearly reinforced by the text across the man’s chest. Another idea of evidence is that this picture was made to support and organization that deals with organ donation awareness. The journal shows evidence by the research that was done to contribute to the issue at hand. It shows a trace of effort to explode the issue that comes with dealing with this sort of patient and the reactions that outsiders have to the matter. The journal obviously has more opening to address and explain the ideas while the picture is much more limited to what it is able to feature. The picture was the one that presented the logos in a better way by the information about organ donation that was included under it. The article was a way of presenting the issues that doctors faced when trying to put the inmate on the transplant list. There was little information on the actual issue of organ transplants.
Structure and Delivery
The structure of the picture has a presentable approach that allows the use of colors, fonts and more freedom on the organization of the section. Any image or poster is going to be limited to the amount of text that it can feature. These types of genres focus on an image that is going to make you feel emotion, more than the information of the text. The journal is straight forward with black and white text and no visuals to support the topic. The journal also has a more organized approach in there text. Journals have the ability to provide more information that is controlled and dived into subtopics. There are many differences, such as color and organizations that fit each genre.
Conclusion
The journal seems to portray a specific topic within the genre, with the ability to promote more information. Since it is a longer piece, it contains more information. The picture is a more board statement that does not have a specific subtopic with in the topic. There is no doubt that both these genres have a positive intention. They are clear in their message and hold creditable sources. While the image was a more general overlook of organ donation, the journal is a genre that is better suited to the topic at hand. The journal is a better efficiencies on the topic since it is focusing on the inmate’s ability to be added to the transplant list.
